About Rangeley Lakes State Forest

Rangeley Lakes State Forest is a large expanse of public land located in Franklin County in western Maine, centered around the scenic Rangeley Lakes Region. This forest features a mix of hardwood and coniferous trees, with moose and black bear among the larger wildlife species present. The forest’s diverse terrain includes gentle rolling hills, lakeshores, wetlands, and forested trails. Rich in history, the area was once logged extensively and later protected for public recreation and conservation. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking on well-maintained trails, fishing and paddling on the interconnected lakes including Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes, and camping at designated campgrounds and primitive sites. Winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are also popular when snow conditions allow. Notable landmarks include Mount Blue nearby and several scenic viewpoints over the lakes. The calm waters of the lakes and the expansive forest provide a peaceful setting for wildlife observation and photography. Accessibility is mainly through local state roads and forest roads, making the area an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of water- and forest-based recreation with striking Maine wilderness character. Its location is ideal for day trips or extended stays exploring the natural beauty of western Maine in all seasons.
